The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

The book titled “The legend of Sleepy Hollow” takes place in a Dutch Colony in the eastern seaboard of America called Tarrytown, New York. The main character, Ichabod Crane is a poor school teacher who lived in a small house in a secluded glen called Sleepy Hollow. On his way to house he had to go through a place called Sleepy Hollow. The climax of the story was when Ichabod Crane falls in love with a beautiful and wealthy girl named Katrina Van Tassel.

One night, Ichabod and many other people were invited to Katrina’s mansion for a party. Therefore, on his way Ichabod borrows a horse from a farmer and takes off to the party. In the party there were many delicious foods such as, donuts and pastries.

During the party he dances with Katrina while Bones sits in a corner despondently looking at his opponent with the woman he desires. Ichabod ends the dancing period and he socializes with others and peeps into conversations in regards to different subjects, but most about the horsemen and the times he had been seen. One of them was Brom Bones; the town’s bully with self center feelings and irascible manners towards those he did not like. He was Ichabod’s rival towards who in the end would marry Katrina. Bones boasted about his encounter with the headless horsemen making it an interminable discussion in regards to his abilities. They both abhorred each other for this reason. He talks about how he raced the headless horseman and nearly won but when he looked back the horseman flew off in a burst of flames. These conversations haunted Ichabod who was scared of demons and ghosts and impels him to believe that the headless horseman really exists. Ichabod’s affable manner gets the attention of Katrina, and he becomes a suitable subject in her eyes. This is noticed by Brom Bones.

After the party, Ichabod was on his way home when he had a feeling that something was amiss. As he keeps riding back home he felt a tremulous chill in his spine, when he turns around and sees the headless horseman. Ichabod, filled with horror, takes off in a hurry. Ichabod could hear the footsteps of the headless horseman’s horse hooves reverberate throughout the forest. As he was nearing the old church and graveyard, he feels something hit his head that made him fall off from his horse. He lost consciousness and remained on the grass. The next day, the farmer’s horse returned on its own but there was no sign of Ichabod. The villagers became profoundly worried and went to search for him but all they found was his hat and a smashed pumpkin.

In the end, Brom Bones gets married to Katrina and Ichabod was never seen again.
